Rabbits love to chew. Therefore, wire cages are without a doubt the best bet. Wire cages will not get munched by your bunnies! Wire cages can be pretty expensive unless you make your own. And, to make your own cages, all you really need is time (which doesnt’ cost anything) and effort, and a bit of cash to buy the equipment, and by making your own cages you will save yourself a BUCKET of money.

Rabbits if at all possible should have “runs” to move about in. One nice thing about runs is that the rabbits will go outside into their run area (away from their nesting box) to eliminate, and IF you have placed those runs above ground, with “drip through” wire, you can have yourself a nice worm farm right underneath the rabbit pens!

For the sides and the top of your rabbit cages, you should purchase one inch by one inch 14 gauge wire fencing. (see illustrations in this post) for the bottom you will want hardware cloth, which is a type of wire that is more closely woven and also sturdier, so that the bunnies can hop about without bending their support. If you have a shed, it works really well to place your rabbit cage inside the shed, with a cutout doorway through which the rabbits can go to get into their run area. That way all of the droppings will go directly into your worm bed below, and you won’t have to spend a lot of time cleaning out the pans below the actual cage. (All rabbit cages do have to have a cage pan directly beneath the cage to catch the droppings anyhow)

To put the wire cages together, you will need what is called “hog clips” or “cage clips. These are also illustrated below. As well, you will of course need wire cutters or snips to cut your wire to the correct size. A good size for a rabbit cage is anywhere between 22 inches by 22 inches up to 26 inches by 26 inches, depending on the size of the rabbits you intend to raise. The largest breed of rabbit is the Flemish Giant, weighing around 14-15 pounds.

Rabbits are a joy to raise, but remember they ARE a living creature. do not undertake to raise rabbits unless you do your homework religiously and are ready to take on the responsibility
